A 65-year-old cyclist has been seriously injured after suffering a fall while riding along a dirt track in the municipality of La Oliva, in the north of Fuerteventura, according to emergency services.
The incident occurred just after 9:00 am this morning (Sunday) on a rugged path that runs between Corralejo and the volcanic area of Calderón Hondo. Emergency teams were dispatched after a call reported that a man had fallen from his bicycle and required urgent assistance.
The cyclist sustained a severe head injury and was initially treated at the location given by a doctor and nurse from Corralejo’s health centre. He was then transferred by a medicalised ambulance from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) to Fuerteventura General Hospital in a serious condition.
Due to the difficulty of the terrain, firefighters were required to assist healthcare personnel in safely evacuating the injured man from the track.
Cycling accidents are becoming an increasingly serious concern on Fuerteventura. Earlier this year, a female cyclist died after falling into a ravine near Las Peñitas, suffering a fatal head injury despite being air-lifted to hospital.
In August 2024, a 52-year-old cyclist was run over in the municipality of Puerto del Rosario.
