Southern Tenerife is preparing to burst into colour next Sunday, 8th June, as Costa Adeje hosts one of the most vibrant and anticipated events of the season: the Festival of Colours, also known as Holi.
Rooted in Hindu tradition, Holi symbolises the victory of good over evil and has become a global celebration of love, joy and unity.
More than 2,000 people are expected to gather on Avenida Jardines del Duque, from 11:00am to 7:00pm, for this free, open-air festival. Organised by the Hindu Association of Southern Tenerife, the event draws both locals and international visitors each year.
A Community Celebration of Unity and Joy
“This is more than just a party,” said Shyam Aswani, president and founder of the association, which has been active since 1990. “Holi is about connection, culture, and happiness. Everyone is welcome, and everyone feels included.”
He also noted that the Hindu community in southern Tenerife alone numbers around 1,500 people, with the festival playing a key role in strengthening cultural and social ties.
Music, Dance and Flavours from India and Beyond
The day-long celebration will feature a variety of activities designed to appeal to all ages and backgrounds. Central to the festival is the colour play, where participants joyfully throw non-toxic, eco-friendly powders in every imaginable shade.
Other highlights include:
According to Aswani, the event typically attracts a young audience, with 60% under 30, 20% children, and 20% older adults, reflecting the intergenerational and inclusive nature of the festival.
Holi: A Global Celebration with Ancient Roots
Holi originates in Indian mythology and is traditionally celebrated in March, marking the arrival of spring and the end of winter. The festival promotes forgiveness, renewal, and the celebration of life through colour and laughter.
While the most iconic element is the Rangwali Holi, the "day of colours", the night before is known as Holika Dahan, when bonfires are lit to symbolise the burning away of evil.
“More Than a Festival – It's a Feeling”
“This is not a commercial event,” emphasised Aswani. “It’s authentic, joyful, and community-driven. We invite everyone to join us in Costa Adeje on Sunday. You’ll be welcomed with open arms.”
In a world increasingly in search of shared, uplifting experiences, the Festival of Colours promises a day of unity, celebration, and unforgettable memories, all painted in bright hues and big smiles.
