Despite the steady rise of digital payments in everyday life, cash remains the preferred option for travellers heading overseas, according to a new report by Travelex.

The Travel Money Insights study reveals that 69% of international travellers still favour using physical currency when abroad, citing greater control over spending and improved security, but will have cards as a back-up.

The report, which combines company revenue data with global survey responses, highlights notable differences between nationalities. Dutch travellers lead the way, with 91% preferring cash, followed by Australians at 84%. British tourists are not far behind, with 79% opting to pay in cash while on holiday.

Philip Bowcock, Chief Executive of Travelex, said: “In the travel money market, cash remains king.”

Why Travellers Still Choose Cash

According to those surveyed, there are several practical reasons why cash continues to dominate abroad:

  • Everyday expenses: Tips, taxis and small local businesses often rely on cash payments
  • Avoiding fees: Many travellers are wary of hidden bank charges on international card transactions
  • Acceptance concerns: Cards are not always accepted in certain destinations, particularly in smaller establishments

Planning Ahead Becomes the Trend

The report also highlights a shift in traveller behaviour, with more people choosing to organise their currency well in advance.

Holidaymakers are increasingly purchasing foreign currency weeks or even months before departure, either through home delivery services or by reserving it for collection in-store. This approach reflects a growing emphasis on preparation and financial control.

As a result, airport currency exchange desks are seeing a decline in demand. Just 6% of those surveyed said they typically buy their travel money on the day of departure, usually due to unfavourable exchange rates.

Overall, while contactless and digital payments continue to grow globally, cash remains a trusted and widely used option for travellers seeking simplicity, reliability and peace of mind when abroad.
