The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued a weather warning for the Canary Islands, forecasting dusty conditions (calima) and increasing temperatures over the eastern islands, particularly at higher altitudes, from today (Wednesday).
Intervals of cloud are expected throughout the archipelago, with a chance of storms developing over Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.
Temperatures are set to rise across the region, accompanied by moderate northerly winds. However, on the high peaks of Tenerife, winds are expected to be strong, with potentially very strong gusts.
Maritime conditions are also expected to be challenging, with northerly or northeasterly winds of force 3 to 5, occasionally reaching force 6. Seas will range from slight to moderate, temporarily becoming rough at times. In southern and southwestern coastal areas, variable winds of force 1 to 3 are forecast, with generally slight to moderate seas. A northerly swell is expected, producing waves around one metre high. Visibility may be reduced temporarily due to rainfall and haze.
Forecast for each of the main Canary Islands:
LANZAROTE
Low clouds are expected along the northern and western coasts, with mid and high-level clouds throughout the island during the morning. There is a chance of light, scattered drizzle and the possibility of isolated storms. Skies will become mostly clear by afternoon. The calima will be more concentrated at higher altitudes. Temperatures will rise slightly, with the southeast potentially reaching 30°C. Winds will be light to moderate from the north, with variable light winds inland.
Expected temperatures: Minimum of 19°C and maximum of 29°C
FUERTEVENTURA
Similar conditions to Lanzarote are forecast, with low clouds on the western coast and mid to high-level cloud across the island during the morning. Light, scattered drizzle is possible, and isolated storms cannot be ruled out. Skies will clear by the afternoon. The calima will primarily affect higher altitudes but may also impact surface levels. Temperatures will rise slightly, potentially reaching 30°C in the southeast. Winds will be light to moderate from the north, with variable light winds inland.
Expected temperatures: Minimum of 18°C and maximum of 28°C
GRAN CANARIA:
Cloudy intervals are expected along the northern coast during early morning and late evening. Mid and high-level clouds will dominate during the first half of the day, with a slight chance of light, scattered drizzle. Skies will clear from midday onwards. The calima will generally be light, more concentrated at altitude. Temperatures will rise slightly, especially inland, where values may locally reach or exceed 30°C on southern-facing slopes. Moderate northerly winds are expected along the coasts, occasionally becoming strong on southeastern and northwestern slopes during midday hours. At higher altitudes, winds will be moderate from the southwest.
Expected temperatures: Minimum of 20°C and maximum of 28°C
TENERIFE:
The northern coast will experience cloud cover during the early and late hours, with occasional breaks in cloud cover during the central hours. Elsewhere, generally clear skies are expected, with occasional clouds inland. Maximum temperatures will remain steady, while minimum temperatures may drop slightly inland. Winds will be light to moderate from the north. At higher elevations, winds will be moderate from the southwest, becoming strong with very strong gusts at the highest points.
Expected temperatures: Minimum of 19°C and maximum of 28°C
