Government activates alert for snow in Tenerife, Gran Canaria and La Palma

2021/01/09 08:20:22 Written by Canarian Weekly National

The Canary Islands Government, through the General Directorate of Security and Emergencies, has declared a pre-alert for snow in Tenerife, Gran Canaria and La Palma, from altitudes of 1,700 metres. The archipelago is still under the effects of the storm Filomena, which has brought heavy rains and strong winds to parts of all the islands since Wednesday.

In Tenerife, all access roads to Mt Teide are now closed to traffic due to landslides on the roads and ice patches in some areas. The reopening of the roads will depend on the evolution of the storm, and Titsa has suspended all services to Teide and to Punta de Teno until further notice.

The Canary Islands expects cloudy intervals today, Saturday, being cloudier in the north of the islands at greater relief, with weak or moderate rains, which are expected to be stronger in Tenerife, particularly inland, according to Aemet, which could also bring sleet to the summits of Tenerife and La Palma as well.

The Aemet forecast for today by islands is as follows:
TENERIFE:

Cloudy intervals in the south, cloudier in the north, with weak to moderate rains getting stronger in the middle of the day. In central areas sleet and snow is expected at altitude.
In the rest of the island, a low probability of light, occasional and scattered showers. A strong northwest wind in the first half of the day on the peaks, with heavy gusts, dying off in the afternoon.
In Santa Cruz: a minimum of 14° C and a maximum of 18° C.

A northwest wind in the first half of the day on peaks, where gusts are not ruled out. During the afternoon it will turn to the north.
In Las Palmas: a minimum of 15° C and a maximum of 19° C.
