Covid update: 971 new cases and ICU occupancy increases by 22% overnight

The Ministry of Health have released the latest epidemiological data for the Canary Islands, which once again shows that the curve is not yet being bent with almost 1,000 new cases in 24 hours, and over 400 in both Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

All the islands have new cases today with 471 in Tenerife, 408 in Gran Canaria, 39 in Fuerteventura, 37 in Lanzarote, 9 in La Palma, 4 in La Gomera, and 2 in El Hierro. There has also been one Covid death reported in Tenerife taking the total number of deaths to 818.

Even with 604 people medically discharged in the last 24 hours, active cases have increased by 366 to 12,888 people with Covid-19 in the islands, of which 423 are in hospital wards and 87 are in ICU, an increase of 22% since yesterday.

Domingo González, the intensive care doctor who went viral on social media for fighting back against vaccine deniers and the situation of hospitals due to the recklessness of some sections of the population, confirmed this morning (Thursday) that the young woman admitted to ICU whom he referred to in his open letter saying that she was in a "very serious" state, died early this morning from Covid.

"She was a young woman without any previous pathologies, although with some risk factors that were contagious in a social environment," confirmed Domingo González in La Mañana de Cope Canarias.

In addition, the doctor reported that not only was the young woman affected by the coronavirus, but that her parents are currently admitted to the ICU in a serious condition also. “This is the situation that the population does not want to see or understand. They want to be ignorant to it and continue partying.”

"Adequate measures are not being taken, neither by the authorities nor by the population," said González, “it is important for people to face the harsh reality that health professionals are experiencing to raise awareness that what is happening is serious. Once on a ventilator, the minimum time in Intensive Care is 3 weeks, and it may take up to 1 year to recover," said the ICU specialist.
