Covid update: 132 new cases but active cases drop significantly

According to the latest data from the Ministry of Health, there have been 132 new cases of coronavirus detected in the islands in the 24 hours, meaning that the total number of cases is 54,898 since the pandemic began. They have also reported of two Covid related deaths, a 60 year old woman in Gran Canaria and a 69 year old man in La Palma, only the 7th death from Covid on that island.

Tenerife continues to have more than double the daily cases of the other islands with 68 today, compared to 30 in Lanzarote where the outbreak in the gym now accounts for 127 infected people, 29 in Gran Canaria, 5 in Fuerteventura, 1 in La Palma and none in La Gomera or El Hierro.

Good news is that active cases have dropped significantly today, as 342 people have been medically discharged leaving 2,346 active cases with 237 in hospital wards and 49 in ICU with 2,060 in home isolation. As a result of this, active cases in Tenerife have dropped below 1,500 for the first time this year.

Since January, when the islands were in the midst of the third wave of the pandemic, the occupancy levels of ICU has remained high but stable, especially in Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Finally, a decrease in coronavirus infections has been reflected in the level of occupancy of ICU by Covid patients and yesterday Gran Canaria, for the first time since January 27th, reduced the percentage from high to medium risk, which is below 15% of their beds occupied by infected people.

Specifically, the occupancy of ICUs by Covid patients as of yesterday, stood at 12.4% in Gran Canaria, a level similar to that registered in Tenerife hospitals, of 12.5%. However, both islands still exceed the regional average of 10% of ICU beds occupied by Covid patients.
