Covid update: 216 new cases and 4 deaths in the last 24 hours

The upward trend of the epidemiological data continues in the Canary Islands, with 216 new cases today, of which 86 are in Gran Canaria, 82 are in Tenerife, 28 are in Fuerteventura, 18 are in Lanzarote, 1 is in La Palma, 1 in El Hierro, and none in La Gomera. The most worrying parameter is the R rate which has jumped to 1.30 which signifies a sharp increase in the spread of contagion of the virus.

In the 24 last hours, the Ministry of Health has verified the death of four people with Covid: a 72-year-old man in Gran Canaria, two women in Tenerife aged 83 and 94-years-old, and a 56-year-old man in Lanzarote. All of them were in hospital, and all, except for the man in Gran Canaria, suffered from previous pathologies.

There were long queues at the Recinto Ferial in Santa Cruz this morning, as people who had received the Janssen single-dose vaccine, flocked to get their booster jab after yesterday’s announcement that centres are now open without an appointment.

You can however make an appointment to fit with work commitments, or if you’d prefer not to queue, by calling 012 ( or 928 301 012 or 922 470 012 depending on which island you live in), through the mobile app miCitaPrevia, or on the website of the Canary Health Service (SCS).
