Covid update: 638 new cases and 4 deaths as incidence rates drop significantly

Cases have stabilised in the 600’s, incidence rates have dropped significantly, ICU occupancy has stayed the same, but four more deaths makes this fifth wave the deadliest with 24 fatalities in August already. Of the 638 new cases today, 332 are in Tenerife, 268 in Gran Canaria, 21 in Fuerteventura, 12 in Lanzarote, 2 in both La Palma and La Gomera, and 1 in El Hierro.

The signs of a downward trend continues as the 7-day incidence rate for the Canary Islands has dropped by 22 points since yesterday to 212.05, which peaked at 251 just a week ago.

However, although there hasn’t been a big increase in hospital admissions in the last 24 hours, pressure on particularly Tenerife’s hospitals continues and medical staff from Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are going to the island to help in Intensive Care Units.

Currently, in Candelaria, 70% of COvid patients are under the age of 49 and all but 3 have not been vaccinated. Of the three that have been vaccinated, two had only received their first jab as they became infected with Covid before they received their second dose.

Mass vaccination continues this weekend at the main centres in Tenerife and Gran Canaria for everyone over 12 years old, and today and tomorrow those over 60 can also be vaccinated without an appointment with the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines whilst stocks last, or they can make an appointment by calling  012 or by registering online at www.canariassevacuna.com
