Covid update: Will Tenerife and Lanzarote stop us being on UK green list?

The Ministry of Health has confirmed 130 new cases of coronavirus today in the Canary Islands, combined with 187 medical discharges which leaves 1,652 active cases of which 200 are in hospital wards and 35 are admitted to ICU. They have also reported of one Covid related death of a 65-year-old man in Gran Canaria, linked to a family outbreak, who suffered from previous pathologies and was admitted to the hospital.

Of the new cases, Tenerife continues to have over 60% on a daily basis with 85 today, compared to 32 in Gran Canaria, 8 in Lanzarote, 6 in Fuerteventura, and 1 in La Palma. There were no new cases today in La Gomera or El Hierro, and El Hierro is now completely Covid free with no active cases on the island, and La Gomera has just 1.

The Level 2 islands of Tenerife and Lanzarote, continue to be the ones that are preventing the active cases and incidence rates to drop as quickly as they should be for the archipelago, when compared to Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura. The good news for Lanzarote is the gym outbreak in Arrecife is now under control and seems to have stopped at 179 active cases, whereas the bad news for Tenerife is that the new cases are not focused in an outbreak but are spread across the island.

Currently the IA7 for all the islands is below 30 except for Tenerife (47.17) and Lanzarote (59.05) with the same trend in the 14 day incident rate where these two islands are also significantly higher. As has been said before by the Public Health Committee, although there is a downward trend, it is too slow in particularly Tenerife, and this affecting the situation for the islands overall.
