AEMET has issued the first yellow weather warnings for parts of the Canary Islands ahead of a high-impact storm expected to arrive in the archipelago from tomorrow, Wednesday.
The developing low-pressure system, currently located west of Madeira, is forecast to move southeast over the coming hours, bringing unsettled conditions for much of the week, potentially lasting until Sunday.
Forecasters are warning of heavy rain, strong winds and rough seas, with the possibility that alerts could be extended to more islands as the situation develops.
Strong wind warnings in Tenerife and Gran Canaria
In Tenerife, a yellow warning for strong winds will come into force from 6:00am on Wednesday and is currently set to remain in place until 11:59pm the same day. The alert covers the north, east, south and west of the island.
Gusts of wind up to 80 km/h are expected, particularly affecting exposed areas such as Vilaflor and mid-altitude regions, especially on the western and southern slopes.
Gran Canaria will also be under a yellow warning from 11:00am on Wednesday until midnight. The warning mainly affects northern areas and higher ground, where gusts of up to 70 km/h are forecast, particularly in mountainous and exposed north-western areas.

La Palma facing wind and coastal alerts
La Palma will see similar conditions, with a yellow warning for strong winds in place from 6:00am on Wednesday through to midnight. Gusts could reach up to 80 km/h, especially in elevated areas such as El Paso and eastern midlands, as well as exposed coastal zones.
In addition, the island is under a coastal warning from Wednesday evening. Rough seas are expected along both the west coast (from 7:00pm) and east coast (from 8:00pm), with combined north-westerly swells of around four metres.
Rough seas expected in El Hierro
El Hierro is also under a yellow warning for coastal conditions, which will take effect from 10:00pm on Wednesday. Similar to La Palma, waves of up to four metres are forecast due to north-westerly swells.
More warnings possible
AEMET issues warnings up to 48 hours in advance, meaning further updates are likely as the storm develops. Authorities have not ruled out expanding alerts to additional islands over the next few days.
Residents and visitors are advised to stay informed and take precautions as the weather system moves across the Canary Islands.
