Residents and visitors across the Canary Islands may notice an increased military presence from today, Monday, as the Spanish Army begins a coordinated deployment across the archipelago.

The operation forms part of Spain’s routine “Permanent Operations” framework, peacetime missions designed to reinforce national security, maintain territorial stability and provide a visible deterrent presence.

The deployment involves units from the Brigada Canarias XVI (BRICAN XVI), under the command of the Mando de Canarias del Ejército de Tierra, and will include both foot patrols and tactical vehicle convoys across all the islands.

Officials stress this is not an emergency response or extraordinary exercise, but part of Spain’s structured national security strategy in times of peace.

Where Will Patrols Take Place?

The operation has been organised so that each island is covered by a specific regiment:

  • Tenerife: The Regimiento de Infantería Tenerife 49 (RI 49) will oversee patrols on the island.
  • Gran Canaria: The Regimiento de Infantería Canarias 50 will lead operations.
  • Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and La Graciosa: Deployment will be carried out by the Regimiento de Infantería Soria 9, one of Europe’s oldest military units.
  • La Palma: The Batallón de Zapadores XVI will be responsible for surveillance duties.
  • La Gomera and El Hierro: The Regimiento de Artillería de Campaña 93 will operate in the westernmost islands.

Patrols will take place in urban areas, rural zones and strategic locations, with military vehicles likely visible on main roads.

School Visits and Public Engagement

The deployment also includes outreach activities aimed at local communities, particularly young people.

In Fuerteventura, personnel from Soria 9 are scheduled to deliver a talk at IES Jandía, followed by a static military equipment display at IES Corralejo on 11th May. In Tenerife, RI 49 will visit the San Agustín school to explain the role of the Tactical Group Canarias.

The aim is to raise awareness of the Army’s role and provide insight into its technical capabilities and responsibilities in the islands.

What Are “Permanent Operations”?

Spain’s Permanent Operations framework allows the Armed Forces to maintain surveillance and deterrence activities without the need for an active conflict. It is overseen by the Ministry of Defence and coordinated locally by senior military leadership.

The operation in the Canary Islands is being led by Lieutenant General Julio Salom Herrera, head of the Army’s Canary Islands Command and Commander of the Land Operational Command. His responsibilities also extend to Ceuta, Melilla and the Balearic Islands.

Should The Public Be Concerned?

Officials emphasise that the increased visibility of troops is routine and preventative in nature. The objective is reassurance and protection, not response to any specific threat.

So if you spot convoys or uniformed patrols this week, there’s no cause for alarm — it’s simply part of Spain’s ongoing national security presence in the Atlantic region.
