If you’re heading to Tenerife to spend some time fishing, you’ll probably already know there are plenty of great locations for that prized catch. The island has so much to offer, from rockfish and seabream near the shore to mahi mahi and tuna in the deeper waters of the Atlantic.
But there’s one location that stands out. Los Gigantes in the southwest has become one of Tenerife’s most popular fishing spots. Its attraction begins with its dramatic cliffs, which tower 600 metres above the sea.
Below the surface of the water, the topography creates an instant deep-sea environment, meaning you don’t have to venture too far out to sea to discover some of the ocean’s massive predators.
Here, anglers will discover many species. Bluefin, yellowfin and bigeye tuna are common throughout the year; white marlin can be found during the summer months, and grouper, wreckfish and parrotfish frequent the volcanic seafloor. For those choosing to cast their lines from the shore, the towering cliffs offer a natural wall blocking the winds you might find elsewhere on the island.
Meanwhile, if venturing out by boat, the fact that Los Gigantes sits directly in the path of major ocean currents means anglers can test their skills – and discover a few surprises – catching migrating fish. The huge blue marlin, a species that can grow up to 14 feet long, is often caught here.
Why More People Are Fishing in Tenerife
More and more British tourists are enjoying the fishing hotspots of Tenerife. The sport has enjoyed huge growth in participation in recent years, particularly in the UK, where the sales of equipment like rods have reached record levels. By 2033, the industry is expected to be worth around $40 billion. That’s double 2015 levels.
The rise of fishing popularity isn’t just being seen in tourism. On TV, the BBC has earned critical acclaim for its long-running docuseries, Mortimer and Whitehouse: Gone Fishing, while many of YouTube’s leading influencers run angling-themed channels like Fishing Freaks and Fish with Carl.
In iGaming, slots like Big Bass are becoming well-known among players. Their appeal will often see them tied to special offers, with free spins bingo and casino titles like Fishin’ Frenzy. Elsewhere, televised tournaments as part of the Major League Fishing series are enjoying record-breaking viewership, and fashion trends like anglercore are bringing the attire of the riverbank to the high street.
This is all feeding into an appetite for the sport, and Tenerife has emerged as one of the Canaries’ most sought-after islands. Indeed, beyond Los Gigantes, its hotspots include Costa Adeje and Puerto Colón in the south, where charters quickly reach deep waters in search of marlin, wahoo, and tuna. These are great for newcomers to the sport who want a guided experience from local professionals.
In the rugged north, Garachico and the remote Anaga Peninsula feature volcanic sea floors where grouper, dentex, and sea bass live in undisturbed waters. And to the northeast, the strong currents of Punta del Hidalgo draw in open-ocean predators like barracuda and bluefish. Anglers might also consider Radazul on the east coast. It’s a popular night-fishing spot where prize catches range from rays and moray eels to octopus.
Something for Everyone
What Tenerife offers is something for both the seasoned angler and the hobbyist. However, if you’re only heading to one location during your trip, Los Gigantes stands out with its unique underwater cliffs and rich diversity of marine life.
