The Calima covers the Canaries and reduces visibility at airports

The Calima which covered the Canary yesterday (Sunday) pushing temperatures to 35°C in some places, reduced visibility at Canary airports on a day when there were almost 1,300 flights in and out of the archipelago, as reported by air traffic controllers on social media.

The Canary Islands recorded the highest temperatures in Spain yesterday, and the heat is expected to continue today (Monday) as the calima is forecast to continue until Wednesday, according to AEMET. Visibility has been affected at Canaries airports, but so far, no flights have been cancelled or diverted.

Likewise, the General Directorate of Security and Emergencies of the Canary Islands Government has extended the pre-alert for high temperatures and winds on the islands of Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, and La Palma until midnight tonight.

70km/h gusts of winds are expected this morning in the summits and west coast of La Palma, the metropolitan area and inland in Tenerife, on the eastern and southern slopes of Fuerteventura, and on the western slopes and inland areas of the southern half of Lanzarote from 9pm tonight.
