The Canary Islands are set for another day of intense summer weather today, Tuesday, with temperatures forecast to climb to 40°C in some areas, accompanied by calima, strong trade winds and rough seas.

According to the latest forecasts from AEMET, the hottest conditions will be experienced inland and across the southern parts of several islands, while warm overnight temperatures will offer little relief in many areas.

Up to 40°C in Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria is expected to record the highest temperatures in the archipelago, with highs of 35°C to 37°C widely forecast across the mid-altitude areas of the southeast, south and west, as well as the Tejeda basin. Some locations could locally reach 37°C to 40°C.

Night-time temperatures will also remain unusually high, with some inland areas struggling to fall below 25°C to 27°C overnight.

Tenerife also facing intense heat

In Tenerife, temperatures are expected to exceed 35°C across the southeast, south and west midlands, while parts of the southern side of the metropolitan area could reach 34°C. AEMET has not ruled out isolated spots reaching 37°C, particularly inland.

Calima and strong winds

The heat will be accompanied by calima, with Saharan dust expected to affect the higher ground and mid-altitude areas of several islands, particularly on southern slopes.

Moderate to strong trade winds will continue across the archipelago, with gusts exceeding 80km/h in exposed southeastern and northwestern areas, especially during the early morning and again later in the day.

At sea, northeast winds of Force 5 to 6, occasionally reaching Force 7, will create rough to very rough conditions, with a northerly swell of one to two metres.

Stay safe in the heat

With temperatures approaching 40°C, health authorities are advising residents and visitors to avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, drink plenty of water, wear light clothing and take extra care of children, older people and anyone with underlying health conditions.

Motorists should also be prepared for reduced visibility in areas affected by calima and strong crosswinds, particularly on higher roads and exposed coastal routes.

Island-by-island forecast for Tuesday 30th June 2026:

Lanzarote
Lanzarote will see intervals of mid and high cloud, with low cloud affecting northern coastal areas during the early morning. Calima will be present at higher altitudes throughout the day.

Temperatures will remain similar to Monday, although daytime highs will edge upwards slightly. Inland areas and the south could see temperatures exceed 30°C to 32°C.

The trade winds will be moderate to strong, becoming particularly strong inland and in southern parts of the island, where very strong gusts are likely, especially overnight. Occasional strong gusts are also possible in the north.

Fuerteventura
Cloudy intervals of mid and high cloud are expected, with calima affecting higher elevations throughout the day.

Temperatures will remain largely unchanged on the eastern side of the island but will rise slightly in the west. Inland southern areas are expected to reach 32°C to 34°C.

Moderate trade winds will strengthen at times across inland areas and southern Jandía, where powerful gusts are expected during the early morning and again later in the afternoon.

Gran Canaria
The island will experience intervals of mid and high cloud, while northern coastal areas will see patches of low cloud during the early morning and late evening.

Calima will affect mid-altitude and higher areas, becoming more noticeable across the southern half of the island.

Temperatures will continue to rise, particularly in inland and mid-altitude areas. Highs of 35°C to 37°C are expected across the southeast, south, west and the Tejeda basin, with isolated locations potentially reaching 40°C.

Even after sunset, temperatures will remain exceptionally high, with many inland areas not dropping below 25°C to 27°C. Northern mid-altitude areas could also exceed 30°C, while coastal areas in the north will remain relatively cooler.

Trade winds will be moderate to strong, with the strongest gusts affecting southeast and northwest slopes, where they may exceed 80km/h during the early morning and afternoon. Sea breezes will continue along the southwest coast, while easterly winds over higher ground will gradually ease later in the day.

Tenerife
Mid and high cloud will affect much of the island, while northern coastal areas will experience low cloud during the early morning and evening. There is also a slight chance of isolated showers over the central peaks during the afternoon.

Calima will affect mid-altitude and higher areas, especially across southern parts of the island.

Temperatures will continue to rise. Highs of 34°C are expected on the southern side of the Santa Cruz metropolitan area, while the southeast, south and west midlands are likely to exceed 35°C, with isolated locations reaching 37°C.

Overnight temperatures in these areas will remain above 25°C, offering little relief from the daytime heat. Northern mid-altitude areas may also exceed 30°C, although temperatures along the northern coast will remain slightly lower.

Moderate trade winds will strengthen considerably across the southeast coast and the far northwest, where locally very strong gusts are expected. Sea breezes will continue along the southwest coast, while light westerly winds over the central summits will strengthen later in the day.
