Strong south-westerly winds and heavy rain are set to continue in parts of the Canary Islands today, Sunday, with weather warnings in place for flooding and landslides as Storm Therese moves east across the archipelago.
Temperatures will remain largely unchanged across the islands, but strong south-westerly winds are expected to intensify. Gusts could reach up to 90 km/h in exposed areas, particularly on southeast and northwest slopes, as well as in higher ground and sheltered mid-altitude zones.
At sea, conditions will also be rough, with south-westerly winds reaching force 6 to 7, easing slightly later in the day. Waves are expected to be heavy, gradually subsiding to moderate or rough seas, with a westerly swell of between one and three metres. Warnings for dangerous coastal conditions are still in place.
Island-by-island outlook for Sunday 22nd March 2026:
Lanzarote
Lanzarote will see a mix of cloud and sunny intervals, with intermittent showers developing throughout the day. Some of these could turn locally heavy, particularly around midday.
Winds from the south-west will strengthen at times, with a small chance of very strong gusts during the early hours. Conditions should gradually stabilise later in the day.
General temperature range: Low of 17°C and high of 22°C.
Fuerteventura
Similar to Lanzarote, Fuerteventura will experience variable cloud cover with scattered showers, most frequent during the central hours of the day. Rainfall is not expected to be as persistent as in the western islands, but occasional heavier bursts are possible. South-westerly winds will be moderate to strong, with brief stronger gusts possible overnight and early morning.
General temperature range: Low of 17°C and high of 22°C.
Gran Canaria
Conditions will be notably worse in the south-west of Gran Canaria, where skies will remain overcast with persistent and sometimes heavy rain, particularly in mid-altitude areas. There is also a risk of isolated thunderstorms later in the day.
Elsewhere on the island, expect a mix of cloud and occasional showers. Winds will be strong from the south-west, especially on the north-west and south-east slopes, with very strong gusts likely in exposed areas and higher ground.
General temperature range: Low of 17°C and high of 23°C.
Tenerife
Tenerife faces similar conditions, with the south-west of the island seeing the heaviest and most sustained rainfall, especially in the midlands. Thunderstorms are possible during the early morning and again later in the evening.
Other parts of the island will experience lighter, more sporadic showers. Winds will be strong from the south-west, with very strong gusts expected in the south-east and far north-west, as well as across central peaks where gusts could exceed 90 km/h.
General temperature range: Low of 17°C and high of 22°C.
Travel and Safety Advice
Authorities continue to urge residents and tourists to exercise caution, particularly in mountainous and exposed areas where conditions remain dangerous.
Unnecessary travel should be avoided as Storm Therese continues to bring unstable weather, with risks including flooding, falling rocks and hazardous driving conditions.
