Protestors close runway at Madrid airport

Three environmental activists pitched themselves on one of the runways at Madrid Airport early this morning, causing some delays and disruption to operations for a while until planes were re-routed, according to AENA.

They belong to an organisation called Futuro Vegetal which urges people to fight against the climate crisis outside of political parties and posted an image on social media at six o’clock this morning of two female members sitting on the runway with a banner spread out on the ground.

The activists were spotted on runway 32R by an AENA signalman, who notified the control tower immediately, and, from there, the Guardia Civil who removed them and are investigating how they were able to access the runway.

According to Aena, all flights are now operating as normal following the incident.

Law 21/203, on Aviation Safety, states that this type of action represents an infraction against the safety of civil aviation which, depending on the circumstances, could be classified as a serious or very serious offence, with a fine of between 45,001 and 225,000 euros.

Sources of the investigation have told the Efe news agency that proceedings have already been opened in court number 49 of Plaza de Castilla for damages.
