Pre-alert activated for dangerous seas across the Canary Islands this weekend

The Canary Islands Government has updated its pre-alert for dangerous coastal conditions across the archipelago, warning of waves exceeding 3 metres over the bank holiday weekend.
The decision was taken by the Directorate General of Emergencies using information from the Spanish State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and the regional plan for adverse weather risks (PEFMA).
Which areas are most affected?
The worst sea conditions are expected along:
- North coasts of Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, and El Hierro
- Northern shores of Tenerife, La Gomera, and Gran Canaria
- West coasts of Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma, and El Hierro
Forecasts indicate waves of 2 to 3.5 metres in exposed coastal areas, particularly along north-facing beaches.
Day-by-day marine forecast
Saturday, 6th December
Easterly winds 6–28 km/h, smooth to slight seas, northwest swell 3–3.5 metres.
High tides: 1:20am–1:55am and 1:50pm–2:25pm
Sunday, 7th December
Variable winds 6–19 km/h, slight seas, northwest swell 2–3 metres
High tides: 2:10am–2:45am and 2:44pm–3:15pm
Monday, 8th December
Southerly winds 6–19 km/h, slight seas, northwest swell 2–3 metres
High tides: 3:00am–3:35am and 3:30pm–4:10pm
The pre-alert will remain in force throughout the December bank holiday weekend.
Safety advice
The regional government is urging residents and visitors to stay safe along the coast by:
- Avoiding swimming or water sports in dangerous areas
- Staying clear of seafront walkways where waves can overtop
- Not taking risks for photos or videos of large waves
- Keeping a safe distance from coastal cliffs and breakwaters
