One of the most wanted fugitives in Spain is arrested after changing his appearance

The National Police arrested one of the most wanted fugitives in Spain yesterday in the town of San Juan de Alicante in the mainland. Diego Darío González Ghersi had an active arrest warrant against him in force after being convicted of sexual abuse. When police found him, he had changed his physical appearance quite dramatically to avoid capture.

Ghersi has been a fugitive from Spanish justice since February of last year when he was sentenced to prison for sexual abuse dating back to 2008 when the wanted man abused his daughter who, at that time, was only five years old.

According to the denuncia filed by his ex-partner, the girl was sad, downcast and reluctant to spend weekends with her father who watched pornographic movies in front of her. The young girl stated that he continually touched her private parts, both outside and inside of her clothes, even when she was naked. In addition, her father told her that it was a secret between them that she should not reveal to anyone.

After his incorporation on "THE MOST WANTED" list of the National Police last June, agents received various pieces of information placing him in the province of Alicante. For several months, investigators have carried out numerous searches until they finally located his residence in the San Juan area.

Ghersi has been extremely difficult to find because he has changed his appearance to avoid being recognized. In addition to growing a beard and long hair, and dyeing them blonde, he has been using coloured contact lenses to change his eyes, and shoe lifts to make him taller.

The agents also verified that he has regularly changed address and did cash-in-hand manual labour to survive and avoid being detected. Finally, at 2:00pm yesterday, he was arrested.

This is the 3rd arrest in two months since the ten most wanted fugitives list was released by the National Police, and is largely due to citizen collaboration to locate them. Now, the list is only made up of seven fugitives.
