The town of Derio, in Vizcaya in mainland Spain, is celebrating the sweetest jackpot ever after one lucky resident scooped a whopping 162 million euros in last night’s (Friday) Euromillions draw. The winning ticket, validated in the local sweet shop "Amancio Gozokiak," now holds the second-largest prize ever awarded by Euromillions in Spain.
The winning combination was 04, 08, 16, 17, and 20, with stars 01 and 06. These numbers have gifted the holder a life-changing prize of €162,256,512, a sum that surpasses the seasonal budgets of nearly ten La Liga football clubs!
This historic win ranks second only to the record-breaking €190 million jackpot, which was won in 2017 by a single ticket holder in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. However, this latest win in Derio surpasses the €144 million prize from Mayorga, Valladolid, in 2020.
A Lucky Sweet Shop
"Amancio Gozokiak," the sweet shop in Derio where the winning ticket was purchased, has a lucky streak. It has previously distributed two Christmas Lottery “El Gordo” prizes, in 2012 and 2018, along with a second prize from Bonoloto in 2022 and a third prize from the Lotería del Niño in 2021.
The shop’s owners, known for their "small but mighty" business, pride themselves on being a go-to spot for both lottery tickets and sweets. "People come here for treats and lottery tickets, for a bit of hope and excitement," they’ve said. Their diverse selection of lottery numbers has clearly paid off for many loyal customers over the years.
Derio's jackpot is a monumental reminder that sometimes, luck really can strike twice, or even more, in the same place!
