The Canary Islands Government has announced a €17 million plan to improve home help services for people who need daily support in Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, La Gomera, and Tenerife.

The funding will cover two areas: providing direct home help to residents in need, and supervising the quality of those services.

The Minister for Social Welfare, Candelaria Delgado, explained that the old system, managed through agreements with the island councils, had not worked well. “In some cases, the service was not delivered at all, and in others it was uneven, which meant some people received better care than others. With this new model, we want to make sure that everyone has access to the same level of support, no matter which island they live on,” she said.

What the funding will do

Most of the money, just under €16.9 million, will go towards direct home help. This service supports people who are dependent, or at risk of becoming so, with their everyday needs. The goal is to help them stay in their homes and communities, avoid loneliness, and improve their quality of life.

Care includes personal and domestic support, social and psychological help, and professional assistance to make daily life safer and more comfortable.

A smaller amount, around €117,000, will be used for supervision and quality control. This will ensure that the services are being delivered effectively and consistently across the islands.

The Government says the service is essential for promoting independence and providing dignity to those who rely on daily care.
