The Canary Islands Health Department has launched an investigation into a suspected Salmonella outbreak that has affected 11 people, most of them hospital patients in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria.
According to an official statement, eight cases were detected at the Hospital Universitario Insular de Gran Canaria, while three others were linked to the adjoining Juan Carlos I hospital.
Two patients have already been discharged. In addition, two more people are under observation with symptoms consistent with the infection.
Following the first reported cases, the hospital management and the Directorate General of Public Health activated established health protocols. Samples from both patients and hospital food supplies have been taken for laboratory analysis.
Initial results confirm that the outbreak is linked to Salmonella food poisoning. An epidemiological report is being prepared, while further tests on food samples are pending.
As a precaution, the hospital’s catering service — which also supplies meals to the Juan Carlos I centre — has withdrawn and immobilised the food items suspected of being the source of the infection.
The Epidemiological Surveillance Unit, in coordination with hospital management, continues to monitor the situation closely and will maintain follow-up in case new cases emerge.
Health authorities have reassured the public that all necessary measures are in place to contain the outbreak and prevent further infections.
