The ‘invasion’ of motorhomes in the south of Tenerife continues, and according to the Canary Islands Association of Approved Motorhomes and Campers, they are not all being used for people to live in.
Speaking on COPE radio, the president of the association, Juan Martín, claims that many motorhomes in Playa de las Américas are being used for illegal holiday rentals or even to practice prostitution, and wants the council to remove them, from the streets.
"Supposedly, many of the owners of these motorhomes are parking them on public roads or parking spaces, which we are not allowed to do, then take the keys so that they cannot be moved, and advertise them as holiday accommodation for tourists."
The problem is that the accumulation of this type of vehicle in areas such as the parking by the old Metrópolis nightclub or Avenida de Ámsterdam in Los Cristianos is increasing, monopolising parking areas and occupying spaces that are not prepared for this purpose as they don’t have electricity or sewage emptying points, and reducing parking for residents and tourists, which is already difficult.
The Arona City Council is already working to prepare a census that could precede the drafting of new laws that regulate caravanning in the municipality, since, currently, they lack power in this regard.
