The municipality of Mogán (Gran Canaria) has cancelled all council-organised events scheduled for Friday 12th December and Saturday 13th December due to Storm Emilia, as severe weather moves across the Canary Islands.

Mogán Town Hall said the decision was made following a security coordination meeting held on Friday with the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, other municipalities on the island, and police and emergency services.

Officials stressed the cancellations are a precautionary measure aimed at reducing risk to residents and visitors during expected high winds, rough seas and worsening conditions.

Canary Islands Government issues alerts

The Government of the Canary Islands has already declared:

  • an alert for strong winds, and
  • an alert for adverse coastal conditions,
as well as a pre-alert for rain, with heavier rainfall expected on Saturday.

Local authorities across the archipelago have been activating emergency plans and taking protective measures as the storm approaches its peak.

Mayor’s warning: avoid travel and stay away from the coast

Mogán’s mayor, Onalia Bueno, has urged the public to avoid travel where possible and, in particular, not to go near coastal areas during the storm.

This advice is especially relevant for tourists and residents in exposed coastal zones, where large waves and sudden surges can be dangerous even when conditions appear to calm temporarily.

Events will be rearranged

The council confirmed that the cancelled events will be rescheduled for later dates, which will be announced once conditions improve and it is safe to do so.

If you are staying in Mogán or travelling around Gran Canaria this weekend:

  • Check council updates and local news before heading out
  • Avoid promenades, beaches, breakwaters and coastal viewpoints during heavy swell
  • Secure loose items on balconies and terraces
  • Allow extra time for travel and expect possible road disruption in exposed areas

Further changes may follow if weather warnings are upgraded or extended.
