Military Grenade found on a Canary Islands beach by a member of the public

A potentially dangerous military-grade maritime signal grenade has been discovered and safely neutralised on a beach in the Canary Islands, as confirmed by the Guardia Civil.

The device was found near Playa de San Juan, in the coastal area of Caleta de Famara (Teguise, Lanzarote), prompting a swift response from explosive ordnance disposal experts (TEDAX).

The incident occurred on 16th May, when a local resident contacted the Guardia Civil after spotting a suspicious object just 25 metres from nearby residential properties. Describing its shape and dimensions as highly unusual, they feared it could be an explosive device.

Following the alert, the Guardia Civil in Costa Teguise activated their standard explosive detection protocol and immediately contacted the TEDAX team based in Lanzarote. A patrol unit was dispatched to cordon off the area and ensure public safety while the object was examined.

Upon arrival, TEDAX specialists carried out a preliminary inspection and confirmed the item was a military-type maritime flare grenade, measuring approximately 46 cm in length and 7 cm in diameter, containing high-temperature substances capable of producing intense heat and smoke.

It was safely neutralised on site, and the area was declared secure, allowing normal activity to resume.

Authorities have reiterated the importance of not touching or moving any suspected explosive devices and instead immediately alerting emergency services. The Guardia Civil issued the following safety advice:

  • Do not touch or attempt to move any suspected explosive device.
  • Move away from the object and keep others at a safe distance.
  • Notify the Guardia Civil or the appropriate local emergency service, or dial 112.
  • Mark the location and monitor the area from a safe distance to prevent others from approaching.
