An 80-year-old man has been detained at Tenerife South Airport after trying to board a flight with his wife, who had already died, seated in a wheelchair as though she were a normal passenger. The incident took place at the security checkpoint, where at first nothing seemed unusual.
It was only when the couple passed through the metal detector that a security officer noticed the woman was not reacting. When the officer approached and took her hand, she realised the woman was cold to the touch and not breathing.
Emergency procedures were immediately activated, and security staff, Guardia Civil officers and forensic teams rushed to the area.
The case is similar to a recent incident on an easyJet flight from Málaga to London, where a man managed to board with his deceased wife before the crew discovered she had no signs of life.
At Tenerife South Airport, the husband initially told staff that his wife had died only a few hours earlier, supposedly inside the airport. However, some employees report that he repeatedly tried to blame the airport facilities for her death, something authorities are now investigating.
The man was arrested at the scene but cooperated with police while the usual checks were carried out. The investigation is still ongoing to determine exactly how the woman died and whether the man may face criminal charges.
