Major water disruption hits 20 towns in Lanzarote amid ongoing drought crisis

A widespread water supply disruption left residents in 20 towns across Lanzarote and La Graciosa without running water this morning (Tuesday), in a crisis affecting six of the seven municipalities on the island.

The outage, confirmed by Canal Gestión, the company responsible for water services on the island, comes as the Canaries continue to grapple with a prolonged and severe drought.

Among the worst-hit areas are central parts of Haría, where residents awoke to dry taps and limited information about when normal service might resume. The company announced the outages via its website but has not yet provided a detailed timeline for full restoration.

The disruption follows the declaration of a six-month water emergency in November 2024 by the Insular Water Council of the Canary Islands, as the archipelago faces historically low rainfall and dwindling reserves. The emergency status remains in effect as local authorities work to balance limited supplies with growing demand.

Officials say the crisis highlights the urgent need for long-term water management strategies across the region. The Canary Islands Government is now working in coordination with local councils and water agencies to explore sustainable solutions, including enhanced desalination capacity and water-saving initiatives.

The outage is expected to have a significant impact on daily life, especially for households, restaurants, hotels, and tourism businesses, a sector vital to the islands' economy.

Without a stable water supply, routine tasks like cooking, cleaning, and sanitation become major challenges, and some businesses may be forced to scale back operations, potentially affecting both customer satisfaction and revenue.

Local authorities are urging residents to conserve water wherever possible and remain alert for updates as teams work to restore the supply.
