The Lanzarote Cabildo has announced the launch of a new digital platform, TaxiLanzarote.net, aimed at modernising the island’s taxi services and addressing long-standing challenges, faced by residents and holidaymakers, during peak travel periods.
The platform, set to go live in the next few months, is designed to improve efficiency across the island by offering real-time service updates, reducing waiting times, and automating the allocation of taxis.
It will also allow for shared service zones across municipalities – a move local officials hope will ease pressure during high-demand times, particularly at the airport.
Transport and Mobility Councillor Miguel Ángel Jiménez has spent the last two months in talks with taxi drivers and local councils to ensure the new system meets the needs of both residents and tourists. So far, five of the island’s seven municipalities have taken part in the discussions, with Tías and San Bartolomé expected to join soon.
Jiménez said the project would provide a “streamlined and coordinated service” and confirmed the platform is part of a broader effort to improve mobility on the island. That includes the introduction of the Taxi Guagua service in areas like Haría and Yaiza, which connects rural communities to town centres and the wider public transport network.
The announcement follows previous efforts by the Cabildo to trial a Joint Service Zone during the 2024 summer holiday season. However, the pilot programme faced challenges due to a lack of coordination between councils. Officials say those lessons have been taken into account in the development of TaxiLanzarote.net.
The Cabildo is also preparing new subsidies for the taxi sector, aimed at helping drivers upgrade to environmentally friendly and adapted vehicles, as part of a wider push to upgrade the fleet and improve sustainability.
Jiménez stressed the importance of working closely with municipalities and taxi professionals, saying, “The Cabildo of Lanzarote is committed to delivering a high-quality and modern public transport system for everyone on the island.”
