Lanzarote cracks down on illegal car rentals

The Lanzarote Cabildo, through its Department of Transport and Mobility, has stepped up inspections to clamp down on unauthorised and illegal car rental services operating on the island.

The initiative, confirmed in a government press release, aims to ensure fair competition, safeguard consumers, and uphold the legal framework governing the transport sector.

Working in coordination with the Local Police and the Guardia Civil’s traffic division, the intensified campaign has already resulted in 60 formal infraction reports. The majority of these cases involve rental vehicles being offered or advertised without notifying the Lanzarote Cabildo, a legal requirement under the Canary Islands Road Transport Regulation Law (LOTCC).

Under this law, such violations are classified as serious or very serious offences, carrying fines ranging from €800 to €4,000 depending on the gravity of the breach.

A Clear Message to Rule-Breakers

Oswaldo Betancort, President of the Lanzarote Cabildo, made the government's position clear: "We will not allow legal standards or the safety of visitors and residents to be compromised. Legitimate businesses deserve a fair environment. This ongoing effort shows that we are listening to the sector and taking action."

Responding to Industry Concerns

The campaign also addresses ongoing concerns from the local car rental sector. Miguel Ángel Jiménez, councillor for Transport and Mobility, praised the inspection team’s efforts and confirmed that complaints lodged by the Lanzarote Rent a Car Association (ASERENT) were acted on swiftly.

"This inspection drive is a direct response to the sector’s valid concerns about unfair competition," Jiménez stated, noting that such practices not only distort the market but can also endanger customers by failing to meet basic safety and legal requirements.

The Cabildo's actions are being taken within its legal remit and are reinforced by ASERENT’s warnings about the growing impact of illegal car hire offers, many of which are promoted through unregulated online platforms.

The association has expressed alarm over the lack of transparency and accountability in such services, pointing out that vehicles rented through these unofficial channels may lack mandatory insurance or technical inspections.

Protecting Tourists and Local Residents

Authorities stress that these measures are not only about supporting law-abiding businesses but also about ensuring the safety of those who rent vehicles while visiting or residing on the island.

The Lanzarote Cabildo has pledged to continue monitoring and sanctioning unauthorised activity, while encouraging residents and tourists to use only legally recognised car rental providers.
