International Ocean Film Tour returns to the Canary Islands this Sunday

The prestigious International Ocean Film Tour is set to make its long-awaited return to the Canary Islands today, Sunday, launching its national premiere in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria just days before World Oceans Day.

Dedicated exclusively to the wonders and challenges of the marine world, the acclaimed film tour will go on to visit over 19 cities across Spain, with stops including Málaga (9th June), Barcelona (12th June), and Madrid (23rd June).

Now in its eleventh year, the International Ocean Film Tour has established itself as a global benchmark in ocean-themed cinema. The tour offers a carefully curated selection of documentaries highlighting aquatic adventure, environmental conservation, and humanity’s deep-rooted connection with the sea. More than a simple film screening, the event is designed as an immersive and inspiring experience for viewers.

Canary Islands in the Spotlight

This year’s edition features a notable local inclusion: Nika, El Calderón Tropical, a documentary by Tenerife-born science communicator Felipe Ravina. The film draws attention to the population of short-finned pilot whales along the Tenerife coastline and delivers a powerful call to action for sustainable development to protect the archipelago’s rich natural heritage.

Five Powerful Stories from Beneath the Waves

The 2025 programme, sponsored by Lanzarote’s External Promotion Society, features five original-language documentaries subtitled in Spanish, with a total runtime of approximately 150 minutes. Each film explores a unique aspect of our relationship with the ocean:

  • Trilogy: The New Wave delves into the world of professional surfing.
  • Row of Life follows a former Paralympic athlete on an extraordinary solo journey across the sea.
  • 7 Beats per Minute captures the mental and physical limits of a Chinese freediver in the mystical Blue Hole.
  • Kelp! highlights the climate-fighting potential of seaweed as a key player in building a more sustainable future.
  • Nika, El Calderón Tropical, puts the spotlight on marine biodiversity in the Canary Islands and the urgent need to protect it.

Beyond Film: A Commitment to Conservation

Alongside the screenings, the tour will host special guests from the worlds of oceanography and environmental activism. Events will include exclusive prize draws and promote direct engagement with marine conservation efforts.

The tour actively collaborates with a number of NGOs, including Ambiente Europeo, Sea Shepherd, and Clean Ocean Project, donating a portion of proceeds to support their critical work in ocean preservation.

Each city stop aims to create a dynamic space for learning, connection, and inspiration, reinforcing the message that protecting our oceans is not only vital but deeply personal.

For those passionate about the sea or simply eager to discover new perspectives on the underwater world, the International Ocean Film Tour offers a unique opportunity to dive into extraordinary marine landscapes and emerge with a renewed sense of purpose.
