Intense Calima expected to affect several Canary Islands this weekend

The Spanish meteorological agency, AEMET, are forecasting that intense Calima, or Saharan dust haze, will impact Lanzarote and Fuerteventura this weekend, starting today with strong south winds expected during the central hours of the day.

At sea, there will be south or southwest winds of force 4 to 6, resulting in rough to very rough seas. A northwest swell of 3 to 4 metres is anticipated. Along the northern coast, winds will vary between force 1 to 3, causing moderate waves.

This has led to yellow weather warnings being activated for adverse sea conditions in the western islands of La Palma and El Hierro.

Weather forecast for each island for Saturday:

LANZAROTE:

The weather is expected to be partly cloudy with intervals of high clouds and the Calima is forecasted to intensify during the afternoon. Temperatures will remain relatively stable. Southern winds with intermittent strong gusts in the west and north, with occasional very strong gusts, especially during the central hours of the day. Wind will decrease to light in the late afternoon.
Minimum temperatures of 14°C and a maximum of 23°C.

FUERTEVENTURA:

Similar to Lanzarote, the weather will be partly cloudy with intervals of high clouds. Calima is expected to intensify in the afternoon. Temperatures will remain relatively stable. Southern winds with intermittent strong gusts in the west and north, with occasional very strong gusts, especially during the central hours of the day. Wind will decrease to light in the late afternoon.
Minimum temperatures of 14°C and a maximum of 22°C.

GRAN CANARIA:

Expect partly cloudy skies with a prevalence of high clouds and a possibility of light calima. Temperatures will remain unchanged or experience a slight decrease. Winds will be light to moderate from the south, slightly stronger on the east and west slopes as well as in the mountainous areas.
Minimum temperatures of 18°C and a maximum of 24°C.

TENERIFE:

Generally, the weather will be mostly clear with a dominance of high clouds. There will be intervals of low clouds on the southern coasts during the early and late hours of the day. Temperatures will remain relatively stable, with slight increases in high-altitude areas. Southern winds occasionally strong on the east coast during central hours, decreasing and shifting to the southwest in the afternoon. In the central summits, strong southwest winds with possible very strong gusts, especially in the first half of the day.
Minimum temperatures of 19°C and a maximum of 25°C.
