The cost of living in the Canary Islands continues to climb, with the latest figures showing that both clothing and transport have become noticeably more expensive over the past month, and don’t yet include the sharp jump in petrol and diesel as that was towards the end of March.
According to data released by the INE (Instituto Nacional de Estadística), the annual rate of inflation in the islands rose to 3% in March, up by 0.9 percentage points compared to February.
This marks a return to rising inflation after a brief dip the previous month. On a monthly basis, prices increased by 0.9%, while overall inflation so far this year stands at 0.6%.
Clothing, Dining and Transport Lead Price Increases
Prices have risen across all sectors compared to March last year, with the biggest increases seen in:
- Clothing and footwear: up 6.5%
- Restaurants and accommodation: up 5.2%
- Transport: up 4.3%
- Insurance and financial services: up 3.4%
These figures highlight the growing pressure on both residents and tourists, particularly as everyday essentials and leisure costs continue to rise.
Smaller Increases in Household and Utility Costs
More moderate rises were recorded in other categories, including:
- Communications: up 0.5%
- Household goods and maintenance: up 1.3%
- Education: up 1.5%
- Housing, utilities and energy: up 1.6%
While these increases are less dramatic, they still contribute to the overall rise in living costs across the islands.
How the Canaries Compare Nationally
Across Spain as a whole, inflation rose by 1.2% in March compared to the previous month, pushing the annual rate up to 3.4%.
By the end of March, the highest inflation rates were recorded in Madrid (4.1%), Galicia (3.8%) and Castilla-La Mancha (3.7%). At the lower end of the scale were La Rioja, Asturias and the Canary Islands, all at 3%.
Despite sitting among the regions with the lowest inflation, the Canary Islands still saw a noticeable monthly increase, underlining the ongoing strain on household budgets.
For many, the latest figures confirm what’s already being felt day to day — from filling wardrobes to getting around the islands, life is becoming steadily more expensive.
