A warm and dusty Sunday is forecast across the Canary Islands, with temperatures expected to reach or exceed 30°C in southern and western inland areas of Tenerife and Gran Canaria, as well as in interior regions of Fuerteventura, according to the latest forecast from AEMET, who have warned of widespread calima and strong winds in exposed areas.
Skies will generally remain clear, although some cloud is expected in the northern parts of the mountainous islands and in western Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, particularly during the early morning and late evening.
The calima, or Saharan dust haze, will be more noticeable at higher altitudes, particularly in the eastern islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, and in elevated areas throughout the archipelago.
Temperatures could surpass 30°C in mid-altitude areas of the south and west of the central islands, with Gran Canaria potentially reaching up to 32°C.
Winds will blow moderately from the northeast in Tenerife and the western islands, and from the north in Gran Canaria and the eastern islands, strengthening at times. Exposed coastal and mountainous areas could experience strong to very strong gusts, particularly in the northwest and southeast. On the highest peaks, notably during the early hours of the day, strong southwesterly winds are expected.
Sea conditions will reflect the wind patterns, with choppy waters expected due to northeast winds blowing at force 5 to 6, locally easing to force 3 or 4 in the north. The south and southwest coasts will see calmer seas, with lighter, more variable winds and a slight ripple.
LANZAROTE:
In Lanzarote, northern and western areas will start and end the day with cloudy skies, while the rest of the island will remain mostly clear. A layer of calima is likely at higher altitudes, and temperatures will range between 18°C and 26°C. Winds will blow from the north, picking up strength inland during the afternoon.
FUERTEVENTURA:
Fuerteventura will see similar conditions, with early and late cloud cover in the north, west, and along the eastern coast. The rest of the island will enjoy mostly clear skies, although a high-level haze is expected. Maximum temperatures could reach 30°C in inland areas. Winds will also strengthen over the south of the island later in the day.
GRAN CANARIA:
Gran Canaria is forecast to be largely sunny, although the north of the island may see low-level clouds below 600 to 700 metres overnight. The calima will be present in mid-altitude and highland areas. Inland southern and western areas are expected to be particularly hot, with temperatures likely exceeding 30°C and possibly reaching up to 32°C. Winds will come from the north, with strong gusts possible along exposed western and southeastern coasts, while lighter breezes are expected along the southwest coast.
TENERIFE:
Tenerife will experience generally clear conditions, with some overnight and early morning cloud cover in the north and on the western and southern coasts. The haze will be more concentrated at higher elevations. Interior regions of the south and west may see temperatures surpassing 30°C. Winds from the northeast may become strong in exposed coastal zones, particularly in the west and southeast, while the central highlands may experience strong southwesterly gusts in the early part of the day. Light breezes will develop along the southwestern coastline.
Authorities advise residents and visitors to take precautions during outdoor activities, particularly in areas affected by high temperatures and calima. Those heading to the coast or out to sea should remain alert to changing wind and sea conditions throughout the day.
