Heavy rain and thunderstorms set to hit the Canary Islands
Meteorologist Edgar Cedrés from Canarian TV (RTVC) has warned that a new Atlantic front is approaching the Canary Islands and will bring heavy rain and thunderstorms today or tomorrow.
According to Cedrés, the first signs of the weather front will be felt from today, Thursday, starting with light rain in Tenerife and the westernmost islands.
However, the worst weather is expected tomorrow, Friday, when locally heavy showers and storms could hit, especially across the north, west, and high areas of the larger islands.
He explained that today will be an unsettled day, particularly in the west of the archipelago, with moderate rainfall moving from west to east. In the rest of the islands, skies will be mainly cloudy with high cloud cover, and temperatures will remain stable.
Winds will generally be light, from the northwest in the western islands and from the north in the eastern ones, although strong gusts could occur in areas like La Palma and the highlands of Tenerife.
At sea, conditions are expected to worsen, with rough seas on the northern coasts, waves reaching up to two metres, and moderate swells to the south.
Island by island forecasts for Thursday:
- Tenerife: Cloudy with light to moderate rain, mainly around midday. Light winds, moderate from the northwest in higher areas.
- La Palma: Cloudy with persistent rain at times. Slight rise in maximum temperatures. Light winds and sea breezes.
- La Gomera: Cloudy with possible light to moderate rain. Light south-westerly winds, moderate in the highlands.
- El Hierro: Cloudy with showers possible. Slight rise in temperatures. Light south-westerly winds, moderate at altitude.
- Gran Canaria: Cloudy with a small chance of light rain, more likely in the north. Light winds and sea breezes.
- Fuerteventura & Lanzarote: High clouds in the morning, increasing later with a chance of light rain. Temperatures steady, light northerly winds.
