The Guardia Civil has increased its presence across key tourist areas and viewing points in Tenerife and the western islands, with the launch of “Operation Miradores”, a major initiative aimed at strengthening public safety in locations with high visitor numbers.

More than 100 officers are now deployed daily as part of the operation, focusing on the busiest viewpoints, beaches and landmarks. The goal is to ensure a safe environment for both residents and the millions of tourists who choose the Canary Islands for their holidays.

The reinforced patrols are designed to prevent and detect petty crime, particularly thefts and break-ins that often occur due to momentary distractions, especially in parked rent-a-cars at popular tourist spots.

Rising Crime Figures Trigger Action

In 2025, the Guardia Civil made more than 100 arrests linked to these types of offences. Most of the incidents were related to opportunistic thefts targeting visitors at viewpoints, beaches and other heavily frequented areas.

Operation Miradores forms part of Spain’s wider Safe Tourism Plan, which aims to improve security in tourist zones, support visitors from different countries, and provide faster responses to incidents. The plan also emphasises greater police visibility and improved communication with tourists.

The Guardia Civil is urging the public to take simple precautions, such as keeping personal belongings secure, avoiding leaving valuables on display inside vehicles, and reporting any suspicious activity immediately.

With this enhanced operation, the force reaffirms its commitment to crime prevention, community safety and the protection of tourism, a cornerstone of the Canary Islands’ economy.
