Bad weather causes two days of flight disruption in Tenerife

Bad weather caused two consecutive days of disruption at Tenerife North Airport, resulting in cancelled flights and aircraft being diverted to other airports.

Four flights were cancelled on Friday morning due to adverse weather conditions around the airport, according to information provided by Aena.

The cancellations affected inter-island services, with two operations connecting Tenerife with El Hierro and another two involving Gran Canaria.

The problems followed disruption on Thursday, when dense fog and poor visibility affected aircraft attempting to land at Tenerife North.

Among the affected services was a flight arriving from Málaga, which was diverted to Gran Canaria, while another aircraft arriving from Gran Canaria was forced to return to its airport of origin.

Flights arriving from Lanzarote and Santiago de Compostela were diverted to Tenerife South Airport.

The disruption formed part of wider weather-related problems affecting air travel in the western Canary Islands, with La Palma Airport also recording cancellations and diversions.

Conditions subsequently improved, allowing Tenerife North to return to substantially more normal operations.

Passengers travelling during periods of poor weather are advised to check the status of their flight directly with their airline before travelling to the airport, particularly on inter-island routes where disruption can have a knock-on effect on later services.
