The Canary Islands Government has announced a one-day fuel price reduction initiative this Saturday, 4 April, offering petrol and diesel at half price across the archipelago.
The measure, named “Día de los combustibles de abril” (April Fuels Day), is part of a broader package aimed at mitigating the growing financial strain on residents caused by rising living costs and escalating fuel prices linked to ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
According to regional officials, the initiative is designed to provide immediate relief to households and businesses that have been disproportionately affected by sharp increases in energy prices over recent months.
The Minister of Energy, Pilar de Jokaysloof, said today, (1st April): “This as an exceptional fiscal intervention intended to stabilise consumer spending and prevent further economic slowdown in the islands.”
To ensure fair access and prevent stockpiling, the government has introduced strict purchasing limits. Drivers will be permitted to fill only one tank of fuel per vehicle, and enforcement measures will be in place at petrol stations throughout the day.
Fuel Tax Reduced to 0%
In conjunction with the temporary price cut, the government has confirmed yesterday that fuel tax has been reduced to 0%, further lowering the cost burden at the pump.
Additionally, fuel subsidies remain in place across five of the Canary Islands, targeting areas where transportation costs are particularly high due to geographic and logistical constraints. These subsidies will continue to operate alongside the one-day discount, amplifying the overall impact of the measure.
Residents are advised to plan accordingly and follow guidance issued by local authorities and fuel providers ahead of Saturday’s rollout.
