Dozens of homes were flooded in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote, after a sudden downpour yesterday left streets and homes underwater. Water levels reached up to 30 centimetres inside some homes, causing serious damage and power cuts overnight.
The heavy rain began at around 5:30pm, and within just over an hour, emergency services were already dealing with multiple flooding incidents. Although the heaviest rainfall was recorded later in the evening, many homes had already been inundated earlier in the afternoon.
Weather data showed intense rainfall across parts of the area, particularly around Montaña Roja and Faro Pechiguera, where the worst flooding was reported. In contrast, much lower levels were recorded near the harbour, showing just how localised the storm was.
Residents described how water quickly built up in gardens before rushing into homes and flooding entire rooms. In the worst-affected properties, furniture and mattresses were left soaked and unusable.
Power cuts affected many homes until the early hours, while internet and mobile coverage were also disrupted. Streets were left flooded, pavements damaged, and fast-moving water flowed through parts of the town.
Emergency services, including police, firefighters and civil protection teams from across the island, were sent to assist. Residents also helped each other to clear water from their homes as conditions worsened.
The island had been under a weather pre-alert for heavy rain, with warnings of intense downpours in a short period. Authorities are advising residents and visitors to take care during unsettled weather and avoid areas prone to flooding.
