As we know, Gran Canaria has some of the most beautiful beaches in the Canaries and indeed the world. It’s why so many tourists visit the island from all around the world, in particular countries such as the USA.
What’s also a major perk to many of the beaches in Gran Canaria, is the accessibility of them. That can be hugely valuable for families who are taking loved ones that may be elderly or have mobility issues.
So, if you are thinking about taking an elderly loved one away, taking them out of elderly care home services for a short period, there are some beaches you can base yourself around to make the most of your trip and ensure all your loved ones are comfortable.
Found in the vibrant city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the capital of the island, Las Canteras is known for its golden sand and clear waters. However, the accessibility features are a real perk.
For elderly relatives who struggle on foot, you’ll find it’s ideal for wheelchairs, with the promenade having a paved pathway that’s flat all the way along the beach, while the beach itself has accessible ramps.
Importantly, you’ll also find accessible parking and toilets, making it a place you really can stay all day. You won’t find a more comfortable beach for those with disabilities or certain mobility needs anywhere else in the Canaries.
Situated along the southwestern coast in Puerto Rico, Amadores Beach offers a real tranquillity and one of the best spots to watch the sunset on the island.
Like Las Canteras, there are accessible facilities, including ramps and wooden walkways that offer easy access into the water. There are toilets and parking nearby too, while there are also plenty of beachfront restaurants meaning loved ones don’t have to walk very far to get a bite to eat and drink, most of which have step free access.
Playa del Inglés
One of the most popular beaches and tourist destinations in Gran Canaria, it can get busy but it does also have a wide range of amenities for those with mobility issues and disabilities.
The promenade offers accessible ramps down to the beach, while there are showers and toilets designed with accessibility in mind. There’s always lots going on in Playa del Ingles, and it’s a part of the island that really is set up for everyone.
Located adjacent to the famous Maspalomas Dunes Nature Reserve in San Bartolome de Tirajana, Maspalomas beach offers a huge stretch of golden sand that is much closer to nature than those beaches mentioned above.
That said, it is also accessible, with pathways that lead to the water’s edge and a range of beachfront facilities and amenities, including parking spaces, toilets and showers. There are also always plenty of lifeguards around to provide any assistance you need too.
Located in the charming fishing village of Puerto de Mogan, this beach is much more peaceful than the hustle and bustle of Playa del Ingles and is a perfect spot for a day trip. For elderly loved ones with mobility issues, there are ramps down to the beach and plenty of sun loungers and accessible seating.
Meanwhile, there are lots of quaint shops and restaurants to enjoy a spot of shopping, lunch or just a quick break to sit back, relax and escape the midday heat.
So, if you’re looking to create memories with loved ones with certain needs, then why not consider one of the beaches above and enjoy the sun, sand and sea all in comfort and without the need to worry.
