Dead cetacean washes up on a beach in Tenerife

A dead cetacean has been found washed up on a beach in Tenerife, with images of the discovery shared widely on social media. The animal was spotted on the shore near Fasnia, a coastal area on the east coast of the island.

Photos posted on Facebook by a local group called “Los Jardineros” on Wednesday show the marine mammal partially submerged in the surf, with visible signs of decay.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the species or what caused the animal’s death.

It’s the latest in a number of similar incidents reported across the Canary Islands in recent months. Marine experts say strandings like this can be linked to a range of factor, including illness, boat strikes, and changes in ocean currents.

The Canary Islands are an important route for many ocean species due to their strategic location and unique sea conditions. Whales, dolphins, and other large marine creatures are regularly spotted in the surrounding waters.

The region’s environmental authorities, including the Canary Islands’ Department for Ecological Transition and the University Institute of Animal Health (IUSA), are involved in monitoring these cases. They work with the RedPROMAR network, which tracks and investigates stranded marine life.

Officials are continuing to assess the latest case as part of ongoing efforts to understand the threats facing ocean wildlife in the area.
