Covid update: 2,232 new cases and 29 deaths this weekend

Covid update: 2,232 new cases and 29 deaths this weekend

The day before the two year anniversary of the first case of Covid being detected in Spain, which was a German doctor on holiday in La Gomera, the Ministry of Health has reported that there have been 2,232 new cases this weekend (1,439 on Saturday and 843 today), and 29 deaths from Covid, with yesterday having the highest death toll since the pandemic, and 124 deaths in the last two weeks.

There are now 102,131 active cases in the archipelago, of which 93 are admitted to ICU, 610 remain hospitalized, and 101,428 are in home isolation.

The incidence rates have dropped considerably this weekend as the downward trend continues, and the IA7 for the islands is now 498.95 and over 14 days it has dropped to 1,491.62 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

If the number of daily cases continues to drop, the 14-day incidence rates will now start to drop quickly as well as we go into February, and as long as hospital pressure follows the same pattern, we will see some level changes or restrictions relaxed very shortly.
