The airports in the Canary Islands experienced a significant increase in passenger traffic in March according to the latest data from AENA, with a total of 4,952,941 passengers passing through the terminals, which is a 14.4% increase compared to the same month of last year.
Out of the total passengers registered, 4,921,071 were on commercial flights. Among these, 1,761,157 flew on domestic routes, representing an 11.8% increase, while 3,159,914 flew on international routes, showing a 17.5% increase compared to March 2023.
42,667 aircraft movements were managed, marking an 11% increase compared to the same month of the previous year, and 2,694 tons of goods were transported.
Tenerife was the busiest island with more than 1.9 million passengers through its two airports in March 2024, maintaining the upward trend of tourism on the island. Regarding traffic by airports, Gran Canaria Airport topped the list i with 1,479,738 passengers (+14.7%) followed by Tenerife South Airport with 1,346,732 passengers (+16.2%).
César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport recorded 791,297 passengers (+14.2%), Fuerteventura 598,861 passengers (+10.5%), Tenerife North 560,916 passengers (+13.6%), La Palma 138,704 passengers (+16.5%), El Hierro 26,540 passengers (+14.4%), and La Gomera 10,153 passengers, showing the highest percentage growth compared to the same month of 2023, with an increase of 28.4%.
In the cumulative period from January to March, the Canary Islands airports have recorded 13,651,816 travellers (total of departures and arrival), marking a 12.2% increase compared to the same period of last year. Out of these, 4,782,750 were on domestic flights and 8,751,925 were on international flights, a 14.4% increase compared to the cumulative total for the first quarter of 2023.
