A beach in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote, has been temporarily closed for bathing or swimming after tests detected high levels of faecal contamination in the water.

According to Public Health officials, elevated levels of intestinal enterococci have been found at the small beach in Playa Blanca. These bacteria are used as indicators of faecal pollution and, at the levels recorded, represent a “risk to people’s health”.

The Ayuntamiento de Yaiza announced yesterday, Tuesday, that bathing is prohibited with immediate effect. The ban will remain in place “at least until the results of new laboratory analyses are known within the next 48 hours”.

Local authorities are urging both residents and visitors to respect the closure while municipal technicians investigate the cause of the contamination.

Public Health teams are continuing to take water samples and carry out further analysis to monitor the situation.

In the meantime, the council has advised that alternative beaches remain open, including those within the Monumento Natural de Los Ajaches, as well as Playa Dorada and Playa Flamingo.

Updates are expected once the next set of water quality results becomes available.
