The beach in the coastal town of Caleta de Famara, Lanzarote, has been closed to bathers after tests revealed the presence of E.coli bacteria in the water. The decision was announced by Teguise Council following analysis carried out by Public Health authorities earlier this week.
The samples were taken on Monday, 1st September, the day after the town’s popular annual festivities came to an end.
The celebrations attracted large crowds with music festivals, sporting events, and the traditional water party that takes place on the shore. However, the festivities also drew criticism after bottles, cigarette butts, and rubbish were left behind in the surrounding protected area of El Jable.
Although the tests were carried out on Monday, the results were not received until Wednesday, meaning the beach remained open to the public for two days despite being contaminated.
Council sources explained that E.coli, which is a bacterium found in the intestines of humans and animals, can cause infections in people exposed to polluted water, making the prohibition of bathing necessary until further tests confirm it is safe again.
Local officials also acknowledged that during festivals and sporting events, some visitors urinate along the shoreline, which can add to environmental problems. However, they could not confirm whether this behaviour was the cause of the recent contamination.
Caleta de Famara is one of Lanzarote’s most famous beaches, stretching for over five kilometres along the island’s north coast. It is especially popular with surfers and kite surfers from around the world. The temporary ban is therefore expected to affect both residents and the many tourists.
The ban will remain in place until new results are obtained, and residents and visitors are urged to avoid swimming at the beach for the time being.
