The San Marcos beach in Icod de los Vinos has been temporarily closed following a sudden malfunction at the local Wastewater Treatment Plant (EDARs), which led to a spill affecting the seafront promenade.
According to municipal sources, the incident caused a temporary shutdown and overflow at the treatment facility, resulting in wastewater being discharged in a pedestrian area of the coastal zone.
Public Health and Safety Measures
In response, the local authorities have closed off access to the beach as a precautionary measure to ensure public health and safety. Cleaning and disinfection of the affected areas are now underway, and officials have confirmed that the treatment plant is fully operational again.
Municipal teams, including the Department of Works and Urban Planning, Local Police, and the public company ICODEMSA, were quickly mobilised. Their coordinated response helped contain the situation and limit the impact on both residents and tourists.
Reopening Depends on Safety Conditions
The beach will remain closed until sanitation efforts are complete and conditions are deemed safe for public use. The local council has apologised for the inconvenience and thanked the public for their understanding and cooperation.
Authorities are working to reopen the beach as soon as possible, ensuring that health and environmental standards will guide the timeline.
