Adeje Council reopen beaches in Las America and confirm that water is safe for swimming

The Adeje Town Hall, in the south of Tenerife, have reopened two popular beaches after high levels of faecal bacteria prompted a temporary closure, and have confirmed that the latest analyses show the water is once again "safe for swimming."

Troya I and II beaches in Playa Las Americas were closed to bathers after recent water quality tests detected elevated concentrations of Enterococcus and E. coli bacteria.

The same beaches faced similar closures last week, including Troya I and the nearby El Puertito beach, raising wider concerns about recurring contamination in the area.

In a statement, local officials said the water quality had returned to “optimal conditions,” allowing for the safe reopening of the beaches. Technical teams conducted thorough checks on all municipal infrastructure and ruled out any failure or malfunction within facilities under the council's jurisdiction.

Similarly, the Island Water Council (Consejo Insular de Aguas) reported no evidence of leaks or discharges from systems it oversees that could explain the presence of bacteria in the water.

Despite the all-clear, the recurring nature of the issue, especially around this time of year, has prompted local authorities to consider commissioning an external report and investigation. Some internal assessments suggest that ocean currents or tides may be bringing pollutants from offshore or other parts of the coastline to the Troya beach area.

The Adeje council said it is working with its technical staff to assess whether an independent investigation could help clarify the source of the contamination and rule out further local causes.

The situation highlights growing concerns about coastal water quality across the Canary Islands, with recent closures also reported at Playa Jardín in Puerto de la Cruz, prompting political criticism over the management of public beaches.
