Weather warnings across the Canary Islands have been upgraded as Storm Therese intensifies, with authorities now issuing orange alerts for parts of Tenerife and La Palma amid fears of dangerous conditions.
The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has raised the alert level from yellow to orange, indicating a significant risk, for Thursday (19th March), as the storm strengthens across Tenerife and the western islands.
Dangerous winds expected in Tenerife and La Palma
The most severe conditions are forecast in northern Tenerife and large areas of La Palma, where wind gusts are expected to reach up to 90 km/h from 9:00am on Thursday.
In exposed areas around Mount Teide, forecasters warn that south-westerly winds could exceed 100 km/h, posing a serious risk in high-altitude and open areas, as well as north-western midlands.
La Palma will also face hazardous conditions, particularly in mountainous regions and elevated areas in the north-west and south of the island.
Yellow alerts across the rest of the islands
While the highest alert level is focused on the western islands, the rest of the archipelago remains under yellow warnings.
Wind gusts of up to 80 km/h are expected in:
- Tenerife (metropolitan area, east, south and west)
- Gran Canaria (north, summits, east, south and west)
- La Gomera and El Hierro (island-wide)
Rough seas and coastal warnings
The storm is also expected to bring dangerous sea conditions. Yellow alerts remain in place for coastal areas, particularly along the north coast of Tenerife, all of La Palma and El Hierro.
Wave heights of between four and five metres are forecast due to strong north-westerly swells.
Conditions worsening
The updated warnings mark a clear deterioration compared to Wednesday, when only yellow alerts were in force with gusts of up to 70–80 km/h.
The strengthening of south-westerly winds has prompted AEMET to escalate the alert level, with authorities continuing to monitor the situation closely.
Residents and visitors are being urged to take extra precautions as Storm Therese brings potentially hazardous weather to the Canary Islands.
