AEMET: This summer is going to be hotter than usual in the Canary Islands

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has warned that this summer will be hotter than usual in the Canary Islands and that there will be insufficient rainfall to alleviate the drought situation that Spain is suffering from, according to spokesperson, Rubén del Campo.

The prediction for June, July, and August indicates that there is a "very high” probability, which is greater than 70%, that this summer will be hotter throughout Spain, and could be one of the hottest on record.

“We do not know for sure if this summer will be as extreme in terms of high temperatures as last year, which was the hottest since our records began, but there is a 70% probability that it will be, in meteorological terms, very warm, meaning that it will be among the 20% of the hottest summers of the last three decades”, he said.

Regarding rainfall, the trend shown in the forecast models is not very clear and it cannot be ruled out that, especially in June, there may be some much needed storms.

However, regardless of these, "it does not appear that enough rain will fall during the summer months, in fact far from it, to alleviate the situation of meteorological drought that Spain is suffering from," he warned.

According to del Campo, “We will have to wait until autumn to find out if there has been enough rain to alleviate the water shortage, and how it arrives in terms of rainfall because right now it is impossible to tell."
