Around 3,000 homes and holiday homes were left without electricity in southern Tenerife on Friday after strong winds caused significant damage to the Endesa network.

The outage, linked to a DANA (isolated high-altitude depression) currently affecting the Canary Islands, struck at 9.06am at the Chayofa substation, affecting parts of Adeje, Arona and Vilaflor.

At its peak, around 3,000 homes were affected, but by early afternoon that number had fallen to 619, with engineers working on site to restore full supply.

Endesa described the breakdown as “fairly significant”, adding that gusts of up to 90km/h, and occasionally higher, were the main cause, along with several smaller, less serious incidents across the island.

Endesa confirmed that the fault had been fully located and repair teams were working at the substation. Supply was fully restored by 4.30pm for most people.

Orange weather warning in place

Tenerife remains under an orange weather warning issued by the AEMET due to strong winds.

The Canary Islands Government has also placed the island on alert, with gusts potentially reaching 100km/h in exposed areas.

Residents and visitors are advised to take extra care, particularly in elevated or coastal zones where winds are strongest, also affecting sea conditions.
