A large-scale solar energy plant covering more than 10 hectares is set to be built in San Isidro, Granadilla de Abona. The project, authorised this week in the Official Bulletin of Santa Cruz, will transform rural land in the Los Lomitos area into a key hub for Tenerife’s clean energy transition.

The Los Lomitos photovoltaic plant, promoted by energy company Disa, will generate 10 megawatts (MW) of renewable electricity, with an annual output of 21.8 gigawatt hours (GWh) – enough to power more than 6,000 homes each year.

Location and design

The facility will be located in the upper area of San Isidro, with access via the Las Hurtadas road, which connects directly with the TF-64. While construction may cause temporary disruption for local residents, the project is expected to bring long-term benefits to the island’s energy network.

The site will be divided into three fenced zones (north, south, and west) with a combined area of 10.2 hectares. It will feature 17,100 state-of-the-art bifacial solar panels, mounted on 570 fixed metal structures. These panels capture sunlight from both the front and rear surfaces, significantly increasing efficiency.

The electricity generated will be channelled via a 30 kV medium-voltage circuit to the Ifara substation, also in Granadilla and managed by Iberdrola, which will act as the system’s storage hub. This design avoids the need to build new power lines, reducing land use.

Investment and jobs

The solar farm will have an investment of €7.45 million. Construction is scheduled to last 12 months, though effective works may be completed in around three months, according to the project’s safety and health report.

The build will create an average of 26 jobs, peaking at 31 workers, with women representing around 11% of the workforce. The project also includes a waste management plan, health and safety measures, and coordination with both Granadilla Town Hall and Tenerife Cabildo for the use of access routes.

This initiative is another major step towards renewable energy and sustainability in the Canary Islands, reducing reliance on fossil fuels while supporting the region’s long-term climate goals.
